Un-repairable items will be returned to you at no charge with no repairs made. If a defect or accidental damage occurs, return the unit directly to Digitrax for service. Please do not remove the shrink wrap protective sleeves from the Digitrax decoders. Shrink may be peeled back to expose pads for adding function wires.

Accessory items that are not covered under the No Worries Warranty carry a 90 day warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. This includes speakers, wire, cables, battery covers, etc.

Intentional damage and customer modifications outside the scope of instructions provided with the product are not covered by this warranty. Do NOT send a locomotive with your decoder. If a locomotive is sent to Digitrax, Digitrax will ship the entire package back, unrepaired.

Repairs are simple, too!The interface acts as a bridge between a computer and the Digital Command Control system. The computer cannot connect directly to the DCC system as the signals needed and their format may not match. Older systems may use an RS serial connection between the command station and a computer running appropriate software, but this method is not common today. Some current command stations may include a USB or Ethernet port for direct connection to a computer.

There are three strategies used to allow a computer interface to interact with its DCC system:.

Model Railroading with Arduino

A programmer-type interface allows a computer to directly generate and receive DCC packets for the purpose of programming the CVs of a mobile decoder or stationary decoder. The programmer is attached to a programming track with limited current capabilities so that a newly-installed decoder can be tested without risk of damage.

Some programmers have a built-in mini booster to allow you to test a DCC locomotive on a small test track or rolling road. Some even have boosters large enough to power a small layout.

In this scenario you don't need any other DCC equipment other than the programmer acting as your booster and the computer acting as the command station and throttles. Some programmers are available specifically designed to download sound files from a computer to a sound decoder.

They are usually specific to one brand of sound decoder, with specific software. A booster-type interface is a computer interface with a built-in booster or one that connects directly to a DCC booster. The computer acts as the command station generating the DCC Packets to be sent by the booster and either uses on-screen throttles or allows mobile devices with WiFi Throttle apps to act as the throttles.

A throttle network interface acts as a bridge between a computer or networked computers and a DCC system's throttle network. Throttle network computer interfaces are specific to different DCC systems. See the first table below.

A few serial port interfaces are still available but are rapidly being displaced by USB-based versions. If you have a serial interface on the device that connects to the throttle network, but no serial port on your computer, a USB to Serial converter can be used. There are a number on the market, remember that the cheaper ones may not work well or at all. Ethernet interfaces allow significantly more functionality than USB because any device on the same network can now access the DCC system and no dedicated computer is required.

This opens up the possibility of WiFi Throttles on mobile devices which are starting to appear now.

Not all DCC systems require a separate computer interface, some brands may have one built into the command station.

These interfaces are designed for basic installations without sound or many additional functions. The various sizes are intended to cope with the various physical size and power requirements for different scales. The standards do not define the physical connector layout. This interface is always a direct-connect type where there is no wiring harness. The decoder plugs directly on to the pin header mounted on the locomotive chassis. The NMRA standard has discouraged the use of this connector in new locomotive designs from January It is intended to be replaced by the PluX interface.

The 21MTC features a socket female which mates with pins on the locomotive interface. The PluX is the opposite: the pins are on the decoder, which mate with a female connector on the locomotive.

The PluX standard defines the length of the pins, as they pass through the locomotive interface board for a lower profile installation. If a manufacturer states the locomotive comes with a 21 pin decoder, it would indicate a 21MTC interface. In addition to specifying the electrical interface and connectors, the NEM standard also mandates the maximum physical size of decoders.

A fully compliant Next18 decoder is no larger than 15mm x 9.

There are two variants: Next18 and Next18S. Next18 supports motor control, front and rear headlights, and 6 auxiliary output functions; two of those function pins may instead be used to provide an on-board TrainBus serial interface. A Next18S decoder adds sound by sacrificing two auxiliary function outputs for the speaker connections.

The interface specifies an extremely small pin "encapsulated" connector. The entire connector is only 8mm long and 5mm wide. Because of their small size, connector pins are only rated for milliamps, so some connections are allocated two pins.
